Removing a Area of the Pinblock, Preparing for the Transplant!

In order to transplant a "Delignite" pinblock into a portion of the original pinblock, you first must remove the wood from that area, so the "Delignite" can be transplanted in it' s place. I start by marking the area around the pins, staying as far as  possible  from  where  the holes  are  presently  located, and  at  the same  time, striving t o keep most if not all of the holes  where  the  plate  must  be fastened by screws.  I drill a pilot hole, and then, in a grand, use my trusty "Sawzall" to cut  just  inside  of  the  line  that  I  marked. I  usually  find  it necessary  to use a "Fosterner Bit" near the ends where the radius  is  just  too tight  for the  saw  to  turn,  or  due  to  lack  of  space.  After  the  desired   area  is  removed, I  use  my router  to make  sure  the walls are  parallel, and   if   necessary,  a  sanding  drum  to remove the areas where my router will not fit. My  last step  is  to  check the  sidewalls  with  a  square for straightness. This  helps  greatly when  fitting  the insert to the piano. Of Course, the old pinblock MUST be stable, and not delaminating for the implant to hold properly.
